Our Journey PDF Print E-mail

As a congregation and a ministry we have been on a journey. Over the thirteen years of our existence as a congregation we have successfully embraced a number of new challenges and have travelled quite a distance down a track that has been new to all of us.

  • While we were still part of the Uniting Church God led us to purchase a property at Yarralumla and we saw an amazing series of miracles as he raised up the money and made a way for us through a host of government processes.
  • When we were led by the Spirit to separate from our former denomination, we embraced the new world of developing a separate church congregation with all its legal and spiritual challenges and became Grace Christian Fellowship (now Grace Canberra).
  • Following a number of years of prayer based on our common conviction that God wanted us to be in the CBD area of the city of Canberra, we experienced quite specific prophetic confirmation that we were to occupy the premises in the City Walk Centre. Despite the obvious challenges God has given us space in the city at less than a third of the regular lease prices around us and we have successfully fulfilled God’s initial intention for us to build an altar of worship and prayer in the middle of the city.
  • Across the city and around the region God has used us to establish a measure of relationship and unity between churches, called the Canberra Christian Network. Through the flexibility of this Network God has enabled us to work toward an expression of unity that would more closely reflect our Commander’s Intent in John 17:21-23. As part of our desire to team with other churches in the region we saw the creation of a ministry training college (now called Unity College) offering people from local congregations the opportunity to become qualified for many different ministries.
  • In addition to local and regional networking, God has given us the opportunity to successfully partner with others in the establishment of the Crosslink Christian Network. For over ten years now we have seen a strong seed movement being established that started with five churches and is now almost eighty in number – and growing every year.
  • In terms of spiritual leadership, we have taken seriously the intention represented by New Testament references such as Ephesians 2:20 and asked God to show us what it was like to see a church built on the foundation of apostles and prophets who were committed only to Jesus as the cornerstone. Over a period of years we have seen a relationship building between Brian and the church leaders with Rob Holmes (Storm Harvest Ministries). Last year we appointed Rob as a part time staff person with a clearly attested prophetic leadership gift.
  • In 2007 we witnessed the fruit of five years of hard work, looking for a legal structure for the church that reflected our commitment to what has been described as an apostolic leadership structure. As a result the leadership support for our ministry has been greatly strengthened and secured in the hands of three very gifted and godly national Christian leaders who, with Brian Medway, form the membership of a new company limited by guarantee (no share capital) called Grace Canberra.
  • From this time the vision that gave birth to the phrase, “Building Church Where You Are” has been taking shape. It is our response to the call of God to see this city and region be transformed to fulfil the destiny ordained by God. On this basis we are in the process of creating a congregation of missionaries – training them – commissioning them – supporting them and resourcing them.
  • In August 2010 we made the decision to relocate our meeting space and office to Swanson Court, Belconnen - more on this story coming soon!
